My Story
In September of 2021, I was diagnosed with Triple Negative breast cancer. These are tumours that test negative for estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors, and excess HER2 proteins. It is not fueled by hormones, estrogen or HER2 proteins. Only 10-20% of breast cancers are of this type. Typical treatment is to go directly to chemotherapy, with surgery at the end, if required. Chemo started in October of 2021 and ran for 5 months, finished on February 24, 2022, followed by surgery.
First Health Cancer Center gave me the amazing gift of a voucher toward the purchase of a wig. There are no words to explain the love and care given when you choose First Health Cancer Center of Moore County for your infusion treatments. From the ladies working the desk areas, to the nurses, to the volunteers, there is only kindness, smiles, humor and tenderness! When ringing the bell (SEE PICTURE) on my last day of chemo, there was so much joy for moving forward and such sadness that I must leave this amazing support group for whom I'd come to love.
This can't be told without expressing my gratefulness for the unwavering support, encouragement and endless love of my precious family who interrupted their busy lives to provide rides to wherever I needed to go, food when there was so little I could tolerate, and bottomless love and encouragement!!!
People are so amazing when they know there is a need. Friends came out of the woodwork, old and new, looking for a way to help. People want to love us. Give them a chance to love you by letting them help when you need it!!!
Back to the wig purchase. The voucher listed a few wig shops. I called them all and was most impressed with Darlene at Lovely Lady in Cary. Before I left there, God had placed a passion in my heart to do what she was doing. That has never wavered. She wasn't selling wigs. She was giving her heart and time to each and every person she served. She shared tips on how to deal with side effects of chemo, things no one else had shared. My goal was to get to the other side of this cancer so that I could give to others what Darlene had given to me. Beauty, dignity, confidence, hope and love, and a pretty new wig!!! Never have I felt stronger!!!
Some time later, Darlene called me to say that she had decided to work from home after putting in many years as owner of Lovely Lady, as well as many years as an oncology nurse. She said that when she met me, she knew that I was the person to continue her wig business. Keep in mind that she did not know of my passion to do this! My Angel Tresses is a smaller version of Darlene's Lovely Lady and the heart of Darlene lives in my Angel Tresses.
